Wherry Elementary School

Albuquerque, NM

FBT collaborated with Kirtland Air Force Base and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) on the renovation and replacement of Wherry Elementary School–an APS-managed school located on the base. The aging 60+ year-old facility had significant condition issues including outdated building systems, poor security access control and an under-performing exterior skin which relegated much of the facility to full replacement. Kirtland AFB and APS received a joint federal grant through the Department of Defense to support the project. FBT worked to evaluate the design guidelines of both agencies and address any discrepancies.

The original classroom building was demolished including the library and administrative offices, leaving the existing gymnasium and cafeteria. Phased new construction included a two-story 59,028 sf classroom wing with a library, counseling areas and administrative offices. The new construction connects the renovated gym and cafeteria.

The project was awarded LEED Gold with key features that include metering and a solar array supporting 75% of the entire campus energy usage. The metering results will be used to educate students on the benefits of learning within a sustainable environment.
