Munson Senior Center Outdoor Recreation Area
Groundwork Studio worked with the City of Las Cruces to renovate an existing turf area outside the Munson Senior Center into a usable outdoor space. The Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department likes to call this project their Senior Playground. Through an on-call contract, this project upgraded an unused acre behind the Munson Senior Center and Heske Garden, providing adult exercise equipment, an ADA accessible 1/10 mile prescription trail with shade and seating for rest and social interaction, a pollinator garden, fruit trees and passive water harvesting.
Community engagement included having seniors at the center vote on their favorite exercise equipment and plant choices for the butterfly garden, which helped Groundwork Studio finalize the design. We were able to take a basic concept and develop it into a constructible project that truly addresses stakeholder and community needs. The recreation area serves individuals ages 50+ and their families by improving physical, mental, social and creative well-being in order to enhance their quality of life.
