Atlas Preparatory Middle School

Colorado Springs, CO

Our second project for Atlas Preparatory School, this 46,000 sf, two-story addition to the existing charter middle school was funded through the BEST grant program, and includes a new classroom wing, secure admin space, cafeteria and gymnasium. The existing school, a repurposed commercial industrial office building, posed safety concerns and utility and circulation issues. Our team demolished one of the existing buildings and renovated 10,000 sf of the remaining existing spaces in addition to the new construction.

Key goals included enhancing safety and security and providing modernized, effective learning spaces. This project also provides a pivotal opportunity to architecturally tie in a campus feel and develop a cohesive campus identity.

The building design follows the criteria for Collaborative for High Performance Schools, whose strategies are proven to enhance sustainability and student learning and wellness outcomes. The design incorporates elements that directly contribute to mental health and wellbeing such as natural ventilation, high-level acoustic performance and biophilic design elements. Natural materials and finishes create safe, warm and calming spaces.
