Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning
The Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning (Academy ACL) is a K-8 Charter School that offers a unique curriculum tailored for gifted learners. The Academy’s customized design accommodates its unique multi-level learning approach, opting out of age-based separation for its 315 students. The division-based learning environment separates students based on academic level rather than age creating significant interaction across ages. Our team conducted a detailed utilization study of the existing facility and programming for the addition, ensuring a seamless design blend between old and new.
The interior renovation replaced the aging mechanical system and piping, added cooling and fire protection and updated lighting. The renovation was carefully phased to ensure that school operations continued smoothly during construction. The project unfolded in two phases, with abatement incorporated before each stage of renovation.
Our team explored several layout options with the design committee to ensure we met the program needs and maximized funding. The design features a new secure entry with visitor control, prioritizes natural light and gathers the students under one roof in an upgraded 21st-century learning environment. The addition also included a new gymnasium, theater and media room. The renovation upgraded classroom space including specialty classrooms for science and robotics labs, art, film and music.
