Jicarilla-Apache Community Wellness Center Now Open!
The Jicarilla-Apache Nation welcomed the Tribal Council to preview the facility in March, and the wellness center is open to the community this summer. The design concept reflects the idea of creating spaces for all the four major Community functions connected by a river (the Concourse). The site’s dramatic elevation change inspired the Forum Steps within the Concourse as a place to gather and connect.
The only cultural reference in the design is a contemporary expression of the teepee at the main entrance. As Tribal Council Member Leon K. Reval explained, “The cultural heritage of the Jicarilla Apache Nation is very strong and the desire to preserve the language and culture is very important to us. But there’s also a need to create structures that are safe and sound and provide a level of comfort so we can come out and share our culture. The building is the house where we will come together to express our culture – but it’s not our culture.”
The larger masses (Gym and Natatorium) are tucked into the slope minimizing their impact on the site. The Gym is a key part of the community center’s function and entering from above at the main entrance celebrates its importance. Stepped glazing along the east façade speaks to wellness by celebrating movement and allowing abundant but controlled natural light and offering all-encompassing views of the surrounding mountains.
“We wanted a very large, iconic and beautiful state-of-the-art community center – and we got it,” said Reval, “We want a facility that showcases what the Jicarilla-Apache community offers, is open and inviting to all visitors and leaves a positive impression.” FBT was honored to be a part of this project. It was exciting to work with the Jicarilla-Apache community on such an inspiring design.
