HDR, FBT Architects Selected to Design UNMH Modern Medical Facility

The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH), a 580-bed hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., has chosen HDR and FBT Architects in partnership to proceed with the design of the UNMH Modern Medical Facility.

The UNMH project is part of a multi-phase, multi-year project to design, construct and operate a new Modern Medical Facility to serve the communities of New Mexico for generations to come. HDR and FBT Architects completed the Replacement Hospital Master Development Plan in 2016 with additional updates in 2018 and 2019; and following a rigorous interview process were selected for the new facility.

“We’re excited to get the team back together and finish this important work for Albuquerque and New Mexico,” said Art Tatum, AIA, FBT President. “The new UNM Hospital will set the standard for excellence in quality and patient safety in public teaching hospitals.”

UNMH is the state’s only Academic Medical Center and houses New Mexico’s only Level 1 trauma center, children’s hospital and burn unit. In addition to its role as the state’s primary source of tertiary care, UNMH is the region’s safety-net hospital caring for a disproportionate share of New Mexico’s uninsured and under-insured population.

“New Mexico’s healthcare providers are making a great effort to address the state’s need for increased access to high-quality healthcare,” said Jerry Jeter, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C, health principal at HDR. “We’re proud to have been chosen in partnership with our friends at FBT to help UNMH design a future-facing medical center able to flex and adjust to the constantly evolving healthcare climate.”
