Hermosa Middle School
Hermosa Middle School is a state of the art multi-story facility serving 650 6th-8th grade students in central Farmington, New Mexico.
Originally planned for renovation, existing campus buildings stepped up a sloped site that created drainage and accessibility issues. A feasibility study demonstrated that a new classroom building was more cost effective than a renovation. A renovation would also fail to address safety and security concern on campus.
The design solution tucked the new 90,000 sf multi-story classroom facility into the slope between the existing gymnasium at the bottom of the hill and the classroom wing at the top. This alleviated grading issues and improving accessibility. To visually bridge the gap between buildings of different eras, massing and materials were merged to create a unifying architectural aesthetic.
