UNM Health Sciences Center Research Building

Albuquerque, NM

FBT, in conjunction with NBBJ Seattle, designed this 131,288 sf state-of-the-art research facility to meet the current and future needs of researchers at the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center Campus. Envisioned as a collaborative research facility dedicated to supporting medical issues directly affecting the regional Native American Communities, the building was designed to house a variety of interdisciplinary research programs including animal research facilities, analytical chemistry labs, procedure spaces, offices, dry labs and community spaces and a full basement containing a 12,500 sf gross anatomy lab.

The Vision

The design team’s directive from the university was to create a state-of-the-art research laboratory space that was flexible and modular for interdisciplinary research programs. This objective was accomplished by designing open labs with adjacent flexible support spaces. The flex zones were designed with utility support, structural systems and occupancy zones organized to allow the flex rooms to easily change in size and shape depending upon the needs of the researchers placed within the adjacent open lab area. In addition, community zones were created to encourage additional researcher interaction to support interdisciplinary communication.
