Bluewater Elementary School

Bluewater, NM

The new Bluewater Elementary School replaces an existing 50+ year old facility. The new building will support over 100 students in grades K-6. The 22,000 sf building includes grade level classrooms, shared music and art classrooms, a middle school sized gymnasium, media center and new administration with secure entrance.

The design is inspired by the local vernacular of the Bluewater community and surrounding rural areas. Natural stone is contrasted with more modern metal wall panels on the building exterior. Site improvements address parking needs, protected playground spaces and an artificial turf playfield.

Designing in small rural areas requires special attention to both the needs of the school and the community. The building and site are designed to enhance daily security and be a modern, inviting learning environment for the students. For the community, access to the gym for voting, recreation and holiday fairs was key to the projects success.
