UNMH Adult Acute Care Hospital Master Development Plan
The UNMH master plan for a new adult acute care hospital re-imagines patient care in Albuquerque. FBT partnered with global healthcare design leader, HDR, to create a development plan that aligns with UNMH’s guiding principles and vision to integrate a new 408-bed hospital with the existing campus and New Mexico community. Working closely with administrative leaders, physicians and key departmental directors, the HDR/FBT team completed an in-depth study and analysis of multiple sites to identify the optimal location for accessibility, efficiency and future growth.
Design Solutions
The master plan envisions a hospital that meets the UNMH project goals, responding to a complex set of patient, clinician and student needs while remaining mindful of the high desert climate, local geography and materials, infrastructure and culture. Initially focused on a parcel of land located north of Lomas Boulevard between I-25 and University Boulevard, HDR and FBT evaluated three different sites and determined that a new site located north of Lomas Boulevard and east of University Boulevard offered the best opportunity. This location provides high visibility and intuitive access, patient-specific entries and staging areas to facilitate movement and maximize efficiency. View of the mountains to the east and mesa to the west along with courtyards, portals, outdoor seating and open corridors staff integrate the landscape and local environment.
