UNM Hospitals Orthopedic Center

Albuquerque, NM

FBT designed the University of New Mexico Hospitals Orthopedic Center to consolidate orthopedic services spread across multiple locations and focus on the holistic treatment and recovery of orthopedic patients. The new 71,635 sf center will connect the existing Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Services (OSIS) facility to create a full-service Inpatient Surgical Hospital with an attached full-service outpatient clinic and state-of-the-art physical therapy department. Applied evidence-based design principles and lean practices improved efficiencies for physicians and staff that translated into a higher quality of patient care.

The Vision

One of the challenges to the site is to connect to the existing OSIS facility while maintaining the existing department adjacencies and circulation and provide appropriate access to the new building program.

The Approach

The two-story building is designed to blend in with the existing vernacular while creating a contemporary feel and provide patients a natural healing environment and be welcoming to families, friends and staff. The new clinic design is sited to respond to the site topography and capitalize on views of the Sandia Mountains to the west and the volcanoes to the east.
