State of New Mexico Capitol Building Renovation
This major interior renovation project for New Mexico’s State Capitol Building informally known as “the Roundhouse” began as a simple study of the mechanical and electrical systems. FBT’s studies revealed the 25-year old building had significant functional problems, required numerous space redesigns as well as building code violations requiring correction. The building’s unique circular structure, designed to resemble the Zia Sun Symbol when viewed from above and a symbol of great significance to New Mexicans, needed to be gutted, leaving only the concrete frame and major mechanical equipment intact. In addition, the exterior façade needed an overall face-lift. With the project goal to make the public areas and committee meeting rooms larger, more functional and handicapped-accessible, the design team designed new corridors, office suites, and new enclosed entries. Mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment.
Design and construction was complicated by the necessity to phase the work between legislative sessions and avoid impacting the operations of state government. The goal was achieved through careful planning with the legislative and executive brand representatives throughout programming and design and extending the project timeframe over a couple of years.
