James likes understanding how things come together—from building envelopes and structural systems to architecture and the landscape around it. That curiosity drives his approach to design and keeps him looking for opportunities to learn something new with every project.

Growing up in South Dakota, James spent much of his time fishing, camping and outdoors with friends. That connection to nature continues to influence his work, particularly his commitment to sustainability and designing places that support people and strengthen community.

James still gravitates outdoors, usually fishing or relaxing in a hammock. When he’s inside, you’ll likely find him playing video games with friends or spending time with his wife.
