Work by The University of New Mexico’s Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) has begun on the replacement building at the Anderson School of Management (ASM), which will be known as the McKinnon Center for Management at the Anderson School.

Fencing was installed, and abatement and demolition of the second-floor roof, bridge and existing ASM West Wing is underway. The project will be constructed over the next 15 months, with a scheduled completion date for the McKinnon Center for Management in late March 2018.

The new facility will be approximately 61,000 square feet of classrooms, class labs, faculty and staff offices, student services and support space. An important component of the new building is to provide group study rooms, student-gathering areas and innovative learning environments. There will also be a new Advisement and Career Center that provides a major point-of-contact for students.

Dr. Steven Yourstone, chair of ASM, gave a tour of his facilities last year to members of the student government and said, “The east and west ASM buildings were constructed in 1968 and were designed for chalkboards and typewriters. Business and government employers expect students to be educated in critical thinking and teamwork in modern facilities. Modern classrooms are flexible and have floor to ceiling heights that can accommodate modern technologies such as flat panel displays for team collaboration.”

The new McKinnon building will completely change the way the School operates and interacts with its students. Their current facilities are cramped and outdated and have not been adequate for the amount of growth ASM has seen over the years.

“This will be a revolutionary time period in the lives of the Anderson and UNM communities,” said Yourstone. “The new building will change how our culture evolves and is designed to provide for and enhance interpersonal and group interactions.”

Due to the construction, traffic on Las Lomas Blvd. has been redirected; there is now two-way traffic on what used to be the westbound traffic lane and parallel street parking, with new diagonal street parking to the west. Please avoid the area as much as possible because traffic is expected to be congested.
